Portugal visa appointment in the UK: VFS Global in three cities

A traveller smiling at a phone in the city

VisaBot works independently of VFS Global and of Portugal's consulates general in London and Manchester; the consulate, not VisaBot, grants or refuses the visa.

Portugal's two consulates general in the UK take visa applications exclusively through VFS Global: London serves Greater London, the south and the east of England; Manchester and Edinburgh serve the Midlands, the north, Scotland and Northern Ireland. VisaBot tracks the calendar of your centre and category: Notifications tells you when a date opens, while AutoBooking secures it in your name. The consulate alone decides on the visa.

How a Portugal date travels from VFS Global to you

Every Portugal appointment in the UK is booked on VFS Global's platform, and AutoBooking works in all three cities.

  1. 1

    VisaBot checks your centre constantly

The bot scans the VFS Global calendar for the centre and category on your subscription, so nobody has to keep refreshing it.

  2. 2

    Notifications: an alert, you book

A push alert arrives in the app when a matching date opens, with email as an option, and you book the slot yourself.

  3. 3

AutoBooking: the bot books in your name

After a prepayment per person, the bot reserves a date within your window for every applicant; the balance follows once the date is secured.

  4. 4

    Each applicant attends in person

Every applicant goes to the VFS Global centre on the booked date to hand in the application and, unless exempt, give fingerprints; the visa fee is paid there.

VisaBot cannot add Portugal dates VFS Global has not released, get you seen outside your consular district or influence the consulate.

Two consulates, three VFS centres: where your Portugal application goes

Your county of residence decides the centre: London works for the Consulate General in London, Manchester and Edinburgh for the Consulate General in Manchester.

London — VFS Global

Portugal Visa Application Centre, 66 Wilson Street, London EC2A 2BT. For Greater London, the south and the east of England and the Channel Islands.

Manchester — VFS Global

Portugal Visa Application Centre, 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH. For the Midlands, northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Edinburgh — VFS Global

VFS Global centre, 1 Rennie's Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT. Serves the same counties as Manchester, and applicants from that district may pick either centre.

Check your county on VFS Global's lists before subscribing: a date at a centre outside your district is no use. Wales is on neither list, though the Manchester consulate names Wales in its district, so confirm with VFS Global first.

Portugal categories: one trip, different names by centre

VisaBot follows each category exactly as VFS Global's booking system names it. In London and Edinburgh, visiting friends or family has no category of its own: ask VFS Global which to book.

Tourist visa
London and Edinburgh: holidays in Portugal and other short tourist trips of up to 90 days.
Business Visa
London and Edinburgh: meetings, conferences, trade fairs and other short business trips.
EU Family
London and Edinburgh: short stays for non-EU relatives of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens covered by EU free movement rules.
Short Stay - Schengen Visa
Manchester: the short-stay category for trips of up to 90 days, such as tourism, business or a family visit.
National Visa
All three centres: stays in Portugal of more than 90 days, on a temporary stay or residence visa.
  • Booking London from Leeds, Birmingham or Glasgow: residents there belong to the Manchester district and submit in Manchester or Edinburgh.
  • Choosing EU Family as the non-EU spouse of a Portuguese citizen moving to Portugal: Portugal asks for a temporary stay national visa instead, with no visa fee.

A Portugal subscription that fits your district, group and dates

  1. 1

    Match centre and category

Pick the centre on your county's list, then copy the category name exactly as VFS Global shows it at that centre.

  2. 2

    Add every traveller

One Notifications subscription serves the whole application; AutoBooking accepts up to five applicants, each of whom gets an individual VFS Global appointment.

  3. 3

Set a window you can attend

AutoBooking ignores dates outside your window, and the bot cannot exchange a booked date later, so exclude any day you could not reach the centre.

  4. 4

Leave VFS login codes to support

One-time codes from VFS Global land in VisaBot's system mailbox. Before logging in yourself, tell support; the code they pass on lasts 3 to 5 minutes.

Portugal timing: unpredictable dates, fixed decision deadlines

VisaBot does not know in advance when VFS Global will add Portugal dates, and no plan can create a date the centre has not released. Days can pass between releases, so allow several days before the first alert.

On AutoBooking, dates outside your window or without room for every applicant in the group are skipped, so a wider window gives the bot more chances.

Booking the appointment does not mean getting the visa. Once you have been to VFS Global, the consulate normally decides a short-stay Schengen visa within 15 days, extendable to 45; Portugal's visa portal sets 30 days for a temporary stay visa and 60 for a residence visa. Short-stay applications go in between six months and 15 days before the trip.

No documents, no decisions: VisaBot's boundaries for Portugal

  • VisaBot does not issue Portuguese visas and has no influence on either consulate's decision.
  • VisaBot is independent of VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International and every embassy or consulate.
  • VisaBot neither resells nor holds back appointments; every booking goes through VFS Global under the applicants' own names.
  • VisaBot does not prepare documents, fill in the application form or come to the centre with you.

What UK residents ask about Portugal visa appointments

Which VFS centre can I use for Portugal: London, Manchester or Edinburgh?

Your county of residence decides. VFS Global's lists send Greater London, the south and the east of England and the Channel Islands to London, and the Midlands, the north, Scotland and Northern Ireland to Manchester or Edinburgh, whichever you prefer. Wales is on neither list, so check with VFS Global before booking.

Do I apply at the Portuguese consulate in London or Manchester?

No: the application is lodged at a VFS Global centre, because both Portuguese consulates general take visa applications exclusively through VFS Global. The consulate for your county then examines the file and decides on the visa, while VFS Global handles appointments and submission.

Which category should I pick for a Portugal visa appointment?

Pick by centre and length of stay. London and Edinburgh split short trips into Tourist visa, Business Visa and EU Family; Manchester books every short stay as Short Stay - Schengen Visa. Stays over 90 days need National Visa, and VisaBot support can change the category later.

What if VFS Global has no Portugal appointments available?

VisaBot keeps checking VFS Global for the 30 days of your subscription and reacts when Portugal dates reappear. Releases do not happen daily, so an alert may take several days to arrive, and no service can create a date VFS Global has not released.

Can my family share one subscription for a Portugal appointment?

Yes, within limits. A single Notifications plan alerts the whole application at once. AutoBooking for Portugal handles up to five applicants, each paid for separately, and searches for dates that fit the whole group inside your window, since VFS Global gives every family member an individual appointment.

Why use VisaBot instead of refreshing the VFS Portugal page myself?

VisaBot re-checks the Portugal calendar of your VFS Global centre and category constantly, so you hear about a date without watching the page, and AutoBooking can book it in the applicants' names. VisaBot sees the same calendar as everyone else: no hidden dates, no held slots, no queue-jumping.

What does AutoBooking need from me for a Portugal booking?

Applicant details, a date window and payment; Portugal routes ask for no passport photo, selfie or face scan. On VFS Global routes you pay a prepayment per applicant when subscribing, which covers the centre's booking fee, then the balance through a link within 48 hours of the booking.

What does VisaBot charge for Portugal alerts and bookings?

Notifications cost from £35 a month, and one subscription covers every applicant on it. AutoBooking costs from £100 per applicant; the final amount depends on the visa centre's fee.
